Inventing a Better Future: How AI Can Solve Humanity’s Biggest Challenges

When you think of artificial intelligence, do you imagine algorithms quietly crunching numbers or chatbots spitting out quick answers? Dr. Marcus Weller imagines something bigger — much bigger. Here’s what I learned when I interviewed him for my podcast, Care More Be Better.

Dr. Marcus Weller, CEO of DeepInvent.ai

As the CEO of DeepInvent.ai, Dr/ Marcus Weller is building AI that doesn’t just analyze data but actively invents. His platform can take a kernel of an idea and, in minutes, generate patent-ready concepts — complete with research, industry context, and market trends — to solve pressing problems for humanity.

And he’s not keeping it locked away for a select few. Through the Deep Invent for Good initiative, Weller is inviting anyone with a bright idea to use the platform for free and enter a contest that awards $10,000 to the best open-sourced invention to benefit humanity.

“I am an incorrigible optimist. I refuse to relent and have a fatalistic perspective that the future has to be bad. I think we can affect it now — and the actions we take today can radically change not just the technological landscape, but the entire economic framework.” — Marcus Weller

From Curiosity to Superintelligence

Weller’s journey started in childhood, taking apart appliances around the house — often ones that weren’t even broken — just to see how they worked. That curiosity evolved into a career spanning semiconductors, AR, and cognitive science, culminating in his PhD in industrial psychology.

At DeepInvent.ai, Weller and his team have trained AI to think more like human innovators. They’ve embedded what he calls “cognitive heuristics” — the mental shortcuts and analog reasoning techniques humans use to make creative leaps. The result is an AI that can extrapolate ideas across disciplines, recognizing patterns in one field and applying them to another.

“If we could imbue AI with our own human cognitive heuristics, maybe they could get closer to generalizing beyond their training — to innovate in ways we never imagined.”

This AI doesn’t just run through its programming. It actively identifies “white space” — areas of low innovation density — and generates new ideas with high utility that don’t yet exist.

Self-Improving AI: A World First

In December 2024, Weller’s team gave Deep Invent an unusual challenge: improve its own architecture. The AI reviewed its product definition and proposed a new design called Recursive Evolutionary Inference.

“It was about 85% the same as what I had in my notebook — eight months of my own best thinking,” Weller recalls. “And it came up with it in about eight minutes.”

That same day, Deep Invent generated and filed a patent on its own improvement. It’s now the architecture running on the platform.

AI for Good, Not Just for Profit

The potential power of self-improving AI raises important ethical questions. Weller is clear: Deep Invent has guardrails to prevent harmful inventions, from weapons systems to technologies that could cause environmental harm.

But the biggest ethical challenge, he believes, is ensuring that AI’s benefits aren’t reserved for the privileged few. That’s why Deep Invent for Good exists.

“If there’s a possibility it can be very bad, then there’s a possibility it can be very good. That means our involvement in shaping that outcome is more important than ever. It might be the most important thing we ever do.”

The Deep Invent for Good Contest

Running through August 21, 2025, the contest invites anyone — scientist, farmer, student, artist — to submit an open-sourced invention designed to help humanity.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Sign up at DeepInvent.ai and use the platform for free.
  2. Develop your invention idea with the AI’s help.
  3. Open-source it by posting publicly on LinkedIn and tagging Deep Invent.

Judges include industry leaders like the head of Microsoft Copilot for Office 365 and Chris Yeh, co-author of Blitzscaling. The winner receives $10,000 cash — and, perhaps more importantly, exposure to a network of innovators and resources to bring their idea to life.

Early submissions have included:

  • Non-invasive brain-computer interfaces for adaptive prosthetics
  • Novel cancer therapies for treatment-resistant cases
  • 3D-printed prosthetic sockets for growing children
  • Solar microgrid innovations for off-grid communities

Even non-winners may find their projects gaining support. “We want to connect people with resources,” Weller says. “The goal is to accelerate the good we can do for humanity.”

Why Climate and Humanitarian Impact Matter

Weller is deeply aware of the climate crisis, biodiversity loss, and the social inequalities tied to resource use. He believes AI can be a force multiplier in addressing these interconnected challenges.

From renewable energy breakthroughs to sustainable agriculture systems, AI can help innovators rapidly explore solutions, validate ideas, and identify where they can have the most impact.

“The only path forward for humanity is regeneration. That means absolutely every person, every ecosystem, every pollinator, every river. It’s the only way forward — and we can use technology to accelerate that.”

Sustainable Innovation in Practice

Deep Invent itself is designed to minimize its environmental footprint. The platform intelligently routes tasks, using higher-compute processes only when necessary — for example, ramping up processing for complex biomedical designs, but using lighter models for simpler interactions.

This not only reduces energy use but also lowers costs, making innovation more accessible.

Weller points out that many users are working on clean tech and climate-positive projects. “We’re already seeing people use the platform to design microgrid solar systems, water-from-air extraction technologies, and regenerative agriculture tools,” he says.

Inspiring the Next Generation

When asked what he would say to a classroom of 12-year-olds growing up in an AI-driven world, Weller’s message is simple: don’t wait.

“Imagine the most aspirational path you can possibly imagine for yourself. Then become that person today. AI removes the barriers of what you know or have learned — you can start contributing to humanity right now.

A Future Worth Building

Weller envisions a decade from now where AI-powered invention has led to trillions in added global GDP, not for profit’s sake alone, but as part of a world with greater abundance, sustainability, and equity.

“My hope is that 10 years from now, the world is almost unrecognizable because of the innovations our users have created — things I can’t even imagine right now.”

In a time when headlines about AI often focus on fear, job loss, and dystopian futures, Weller’s perspective is refreshingly forward-looking. Yes, there are risks. But there is also extraordinary potential — if we choose to use it wisely.

How to Get Involved

The Deep Invent for Good contest is open until August 21, 2025. It costs nothing to enter, and you don’t need a technical background. What you do need is a vision for a better future — and the willingness to share it.
